"Tidal Visitors"

Oil on canvas. 2010. This is the first in a series of paintings I am working on dealing with much larger rocks, in a very different landscape. I would consider these to be the successor to my other river rock paintings. The tide was very low and the ocean revealed its stoney bottom to me. The water was especially clear (for the NJ shore) and it made for the perfect backdrop for these colorful boulders. I used a palette knife extensively to lay on the paint, giving the surface an impressionistic vibrancy.
