Copy of Virgin Mary from da Vinci's "The Virgin of the Rocks"
Oil on panel. This is my modest attempt at copying a small portion of one of da Vinci's masterpieces. It was mostly just an exercise in technique. It is fun to a occasionally step into the shoes of another painter and try to figure out how he/she approached the piece. In this case, I utilized many thin layers of paint and glaze, to form a flesh-like surface. You can see the lines in the wood beneath the paint. What felt flat and perfect before finishing proved to be flawed. Any work on panel needs to be prepped and sanded to perfection before any paint should be applied. Especially when dealing with the ultra thin-multi layer approach.
